How I Built My… with Chris Rust

Want to top find out more about running your own business and making it in the construction industry?

Well, it’s your lucky day.

We bumped into Chris from Chris Rust Construction at Jewson Live who’s been in the industry for 11 years. He’s run his own business for five years, so he certainly had some wisdom to impart!

Just have a watch.

How did you get started out?

I just sort of, took a risk! I did my best, knocked on a few doors and did what I could – started my business like that.

I learned from other people though, my dad was a builder so that really helped.

Have you always wanted to be a builder?

Yeah, I always knew through school that I wouldn’t be anything else and that’s what I wanted to do.

Describe your typical day…

Get up, pick up the lads, get to the job… just get on with it, really! Go to Jewson…

How do you go above and beyond for your customers?

You want to do the best job you can, you always do! But you can’t please everyone. Try your best and your best is normally good enough.

Favourite tool?

Trowel, definitely my trowel. Bricklayer by trade…

What advice would you give to the apprentices out there?

You’re going to get a lot of flack, being an apprentice – but don’t give up! You’ll do well if you learn, listen and just crack on. You’ll do it.

How do you take your brew?

Like that… (tune in to the video to see Chris’ brew in all its glory).
