Tell us, how did you get started in the trade world?
I wanted to work in a trade after school, so decided to pursue a career in Carpentry and Joinery. I did an apprenticeship and worked for John Laing Construction – one of the country’s most respected names in the industry. One of the first projects I worked on was building the first Center Parcs in the UK!
And what do you do now?
I’m a Training Manager here at Greenworks, based in Birmingham. I work predominantly with Jewson, as well as lots of other companies.
Describe a typical day at Greenworks
A day working at Greenworks can be as varied as dealing with everyday matters within the academy or being out in branches anywhere in the UK talking about the latest products or services with staff and customers.
How would you say you go that extra mile for your customers/students?
We always welcome everyone who visits the academy as one of our own. We find out from them what they want from the training and tailor the session to be as beneficial as possible for their future development.
If you had to choose, what’d be your favourite bit of kit?
In my carpenter days, I would always steer towards power tools used in timber trades, especially Bosch dust extraction power tools.
How do you unwind off-site?
As a parent of two I am very busy at work and at home! I am a big fan of most sports and I’m a season ticket holder at my beloved Derby County…up the Rams!
What are you most proud of?
I’m very proud to be working in a small but highly motivated and talented team here at Greenworks – for one of the world’s most innovative companies within our sector, Saint Gobain.

Nothing beats a proper pot of tea. Yorkshire Tea or Earl Grey, please!
Finally, what’s your top bit of advice for anybody thinking of starting out in a trade?
My tip for any young tradesperson is to continue to learn and don’t be frightened to go out of your comfort zone. Opportunities will come to those who dare to innovate!
