We’ve donated £3000 worth of building materials to the ‘Coldest Journey’ Antarctic expedition – led by the world’s greatest living explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes. The expedition aims to raise £6 million for ‘Seeing is Believing’, a global charity working to combat avoidable blindness.
The materials, donated by our Stafford branch, will be used to construct two specially engineered cabooses (sledge mounted living quarters), which will house the six-man team along with their equipment and fuel for the entire 2000-mile journey. The team will withstand temperatures as low as -90°C, travelling mostly in complete darkness.
The Coldest Journey is the first ever attempt to cross the trans-Antarctic continent during the polar winter. As well as raising much needed funds for ’Seeing is Believing’, the team will also undertake a number of scientific tasks to provide unique data on marine life, oceanography, meteorology and the effect of climate change upon the poles. Keep up to date with the team’s progress on our blog!
