Jewson Reveals Latest Sustainable Development Review

In an ever-evolving industry such as the construction sector, we understand we have to make sure we’re not just meeting the customer needs of today, but that we’re also thinking about the needs of tomorrow. That’s why sustainability has always been such a huge part of our business.

Sustainability goes further than simply offering ‘green’ products to customers. Educating  colleagues, suppliers and the local community on our efficiency directives also drives forward the sustainability agenda and gives us a chance to work together to improve the construction industry.

We’ve set ourselves a number of targets to meet across the Jewson business, including reducing the amount of waste that goes into landfill and increasing the diversity of our business by focusing on the age and gender gap across the industry.

To show our performance against these targets, we’ve published the latest Jewson Sustainable Development Review. We’ve given special consideration to three aspects: people, planet and profit which are highlighted in the video below:

Here are some of our key results.

People – our people are our biggest asset

  • All of our sites have a designated safety champion, meaning organisations can rely on our specialist team to support them in meeting health & safety regulations
  • Throughout 2014, we appointed 51 apprentices and 48 new management trainees, taking an active role in closing the UK skills gap

Planet – we must run our business in a responsible way

  • We diverted 66 per cent of our waste from landfill in 2014 – that’s an increase from seven per cent since 2013
  • Our gas control system, which is installed in 122 branches, saved us around three million KWH in energy over the past year

Profit – we must be in a position to invest in measures that will make us even more sustainable in the future

  • We work with over 100,000 different suppliers and in 2014, we added 41,000 new products lines, providing our customers with the latest innovations
  • We reviewed the packaging on over 10,000 products last year to reduce their environmental impact

We understand the importance of meeting business objectives and the affect it can have on an organisation. Supporting our customers, suppliers and local community in achieving their sustainability goals is the least we can do, and we’re trying even harder to make further improvements this year.
