We are very proud to have been involved in helping BBC Children in Need as part of a BBC1 special programme DIY SOS: The Big Build.
The programme featured the renovation of a centre for children with additional needs in Edinburgh, called The Yard. The centre helps children and young people aged three to 25. This year it is celebrating 25 years of helping families deal with the demands of daily life, giving the young people a space to develop their confidence and encouraging them to make lasting friendships.
The Yard receives a grant towards its costs from BBC Children in Need, but the building and its outdoor space were in desperate need of a total overhaul. Our Edinburgh branch, which is adjacent to The Yard, donated £1,500 of building materials to BBC Children in Need to help with the renovation. In addition, the branch opened up part of its own yard, giving extra space to the construction team and the BBC camera crew.
The build took 10 days from the end of September to the beginning of October and with the help of more than 300 people, it transformed both the building and outdoor play area.
Stewart Fraser, Merchandising and Equipment Manager at our Edinburgh Branch, commented: “It was a fantastic experience being part of the project, we’re really pleased that we’ve been able to help our neighbours in such a practical way. We hope the young people that visit the centre will get many more years of enjoyment from it!”
