As the UK’s largest timber importer, we have a responsibility to ensure our stock comes from sustainable sources. Not only does this reassure our customers that their timber is environmentally sound, it also sets an example for the wider industry to follow.
The WWF has recognised Jewson, part of the wider Saint-Gobain Building Distribution group, for its efforts in this area by awarding us the highest possible score in the 2017 Timber Scorecard. It’s the second time we’ve achieved such a result having first been awarded the maximum score of three trees in 2015.
The WWF is the world’s leading independent conservation organisation. Its Timber Scorecard bi-annually assesses over a hundred UK retailers, manufacturers and traders on their timber buying policies and sustainability efforts.
A score of three trees is awarded to companies that source more than 70 per cent of timber from sustainable sources through a certified ‘chain of custody’. Getting top marks also requires companies to have policies in place to encourage other sustainability practices.
At present, over 90 per cent of Jewson timber is sustainably sourced. This means our customers can have confidence that the timber they are using is responsibly obtained and comes from a company that cares about an environmentally sustainable future.
The WWF Timber Scorecard is one of a number of sustainability certifications held by Jewson. All of our branches are also certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes (PEFC) and Trada Forest for ‘chain of custody’.
