The eyes have it

Our eyes. We use them to judge things like heights, distances, colour and even beauty. They contain around 107 million light sensitive cells and have more than 200 million parts.* They’re the link between the world and our brain, and we couldn’t do our jobs without them.

Whichever way you look at it, our eyes are powerful but delicate tools – that’s why they’re worth protecting.

But there are lots of jobs where we put our eyes at risk and, unfortunately, not everyone treats them with the respect and care they deserve. In 2008/9, according to RIDDOR, 597 people in construction suffered serious eye injuries at work because they didn’t wear suitable eye protection.

Last year that figure dropped to 484, but a further 649 people suffered eye injuries that lasted seven days or more. That’s a total of 1,133 work-related eye injuries – 1,133 too many.
When we put our eyes in danger, we also put our jobs – and our livelihoods – in danger. There’s always more we can do.

At Jewson we take the health and safety of our employees, contractors, suppliers and customers very seriously. By maintaining a clean, safe and accident-free environment across all our sites – supported with the right training and education – we’re helping to ‘Keep the Trade Safe’.

We’ve got 2,500 pairs of safety goggles to give away. To grab a pair, all you have to do is enter your details, at giveaway.jewson.co.uk.
