Following November’s UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow, one of our nearby Jewson branches in Wishaw has had a complete redevelopment to become our first ever near-zero carbon energy site.
This is a huge milestone for us, reflecting our dedication to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, as well as our wider ambition to make the world a better home.
The changes were made possible by our parent company, Saint-Gobain and its Carbon Fund, which awarded the Wishaw branch nearly £240,000 towards the redevelopment.
The funding has allowed our Wishaw branch to generate its own electricity through renewable energy. The improvements include the addition of solar photovoltaic panels on the roof, air source heating, and a heat recovery system to capture waste heat within the building. Additional measures include new external and internal LED lighting and a new 180mm insulated roof to improve energy efficiency, new electric charging facilities for cars and vans and a brand-new fleet of electric fork lift trucks.
These improvements will help to significantly reduce energy usage and CO2 emissions from the branch. All of the products used to make it a near-zero carbon energy site are actually available to customers through our Making Better Homes range.
This project is just one of several to benefit from funding from Saint-Gobain. An additional £162,000 has already been invested in reducing the carbon emitted from other Jewson branches.
We’re so proud that the Wishaw branch is Jewson’s first near-zero carbon energy branch and is leading the way for further cuts in carbon emissions across the company.
The branch is a shining example of how we take energy efficiency and sustainability seriously at Jewson. This is just the tip of the iceberg, and in the coming years you can expect to see plenty of changes and improvements being made to other branches and our wider offering.
