Street League, the sport for employability charity that helps unemployed young people between the ages of 16-25 get into work, education or training through the power of football and dance fitness has launched a new campaign called ‘Made Outside the Classroom’.
To be Made Outside the Classroom means that just because you haven’t succeeded academically, doesn’t mean you can’t progress in life.
As one of Street League’s loyal partners, providing hundreds of work experience placements and even full-time jobs to programme graduates, Jewson endorses that exact message.
The UK-wide partnership has created hundreds of jobs across the nation in areas where Street League help young people who have faced barriers to work.
Graduating from the Academy programme, going on a work placement with Jewson and being offered a full-time job at the end of it has enabled hundreds of unemployed young people to be Made Outside the Classroom and turn their lives around.
Tom, from Manchester, is one of the many success stories to come from Jewson and Street League’s shared fundamental belief that we must help young people gain the skills and workplace experience that they need.
Struggling with his confidence and feeling lower than usual after being unemployed for 6 months, Tom found Street League. He said: “For me school was tough. It wasn’t my cup of tea. I found it hard. Before Street League I was out of work for about 6 months and I was just getting side jobs here and there. I felt like I had nothing for myself. I thought my future was going nowhere. I really wanted a job. I struggled with my confidence and when it came to socialising. That’s why I think it was hard for me to get a job.”
After attending the Academy programme for 8 weeks, Tom was presented with the opportunity to work at Jewson on a two week trial, which resulted in him impressing staff so much that he was offered a permanent role after a week! Tom, delighted and feeling positive about life again, said: ”I got told I’d got the job after a week! I love it. I’d definitely recommend Street League to other people.”
