Carley Doolan is a Level 2 Plastering Apprentice, and is the very deserving winner of our Young Tradesperson of the Year competition!
We talk to her about building the foundations of her career, her favourite bit of kit and, of course, her brew preferences.
Hello, Carley! First off, how did you get started in your trade?
I’d not long finished a hairdressing course at college when I decided that, really, it wasn’t what I wanted to do. At the time, my friend was doing a Decorating Apprenticeship at Carillion so I thought I’d give that a try. As soon as I started, everything seemed to fall into place and I knew I wanted to work in construction. Since then I’ve tried my hand in all sorts of different trades from scaffolding, to decorating, and I don’t plan on stopping any time soon.
What part of the trade do you enjoy the most?
I personally love putting my own stamp on things, and being able to look back at a project and think: ‘I did that’. It’s really rewarding.
If you had to choose, what’d be your favourite bit of kit?
Without doubt it’s my Marshalltown trowel. I think it gives you the best possible finish every time, and I’d be lost without it. A close second is my mixer drill, but I’m on the lookout for a replacement at the moment…
How do you unwind off-site?
I like to spend as much time as I can with my daughter, Layla, we play kitchens most of the time because that’s her favourite game. When I get a bit of time to myself in the evenings, I love nothing more than spending a few hours on my PlayStation!
What challenges have you faced along the way?
Working in this industry has given me more opportunities than I could have ever expected, but work hasn’t always come in a steady stream. It’s been a tough road but it’s all proving worthwhile, and as long I get the job done at the end of the day, I’m happy.
Which piece of work are you most proud of?
What makes me proud being able to use the skills I’ve learned over the years to help my family, friends and neighbours with little jobs here and there; whether that’s plastering a wall or re-decorating a room.
We’re brewing up – what’s yours?
A cup of tea – three sugars please!
Finally, what’s your top bit of advice for anybody thinking of starting out in a trade?
One thing I’ve learnt is just how important it is to get involved and get to know the tools of all the trades – the more skills you have, the better off you’ll be long term.
Congratulations to Carley, the winner of the Jewson Young Tradesperson of the Year Competition.
