2018’s summer has been standout for sport lovers. Even those who tend to shy away from the goals and glory have been hooked.
Not an easy ride
There’s been punctures, crashes and over 2,800km cycled so far. It’s got us sweating just thinking about it. With just another 500 or so km to go, it’s just a walk in the park for Team Sky, right?
A bit of a long shot
The inaugural Athletics World Cup came to London this month, bringing with it eight nations to compete for glory across 34 sport events. While it was evident from early on that the US would be taking gold, in a last-minute relay win, GB & Ireland shot up to 2nd, only to later be victim to an unfortunate disqualification due to injury. Roll on 2020 for the second edition in China, let’s hope it’s just as nail-biting!
When football nearly came home
They say it’s all over. It is now (for another four years anyway). Sob. But what a tournament it was. With the Champions knocked out in the groups, and England’s odds going from 16/1 at the start to 4/1 by the semis, you’d never have guessed it. While our Three Lions may not have lifted the trophy, the young squad showed so much promise we were questioning whether someone mixed up the Germany and England kits!
Surely with these rising stars, a bit of creative midfield magic and our man Southgate, football actually will come home in 2020?
A stroke of luck for Molinari
Golf’s oldest and most prestigious international tournament, the Open, returned to Carnoustie last week. After the UK’s month-long heatwave, the dry grass made playing conditions tougher than EVO-STIK’s glue*. But it was Francesco Molinari who held his nerve and shot a faultless final round to win the Claret Jug for the first time – becoming the first Italian to win a major in the process.
