Part 12 – Insulation – Written by Gary King

Posted by Blog Team | Posted in The Self Build Journey | Posted on 23-11-2012

One of the things that I was most concerned about when putting the house back together again was the issue of insulation. To a certain extent a lot of the choices were taken out my hands when I decided to strip everything back to bare bricks.

This is where Building Regulations go a little awry. After a conversation with Building Control I was told that I could either put back what I’d taken off I.E. Plaster board to brick. Or if I was going to insulate it, I’d have to satisfy their requirements and use certain types of products with certain properties.

So in a nutshell it’s either all or nothing. Where’s the sense in that? I understand that things need to be done properly but surely any extra insulation is better than putting on none at all? It’s a disincentive to improve what was originally there.

However what with rising fuel prices I decided that it had to be done properly. After having a conversation with the technical department at Isover I was given a series of recommendations. Not only on what products to use but how to actually put it up. They were very helpful.

On all the external walls we used 65mm Thermaline – which is basically a plaster board with insulation stuck onto it. It was secured to 3 by 2 battens that were in turn fixed to the brickwork.

I was also very mindful of the fact that our neighbours have three small  children and their crying was audible through the party wall. We used Soundbar Plaster board on top of 3 x 2 battens with acoustic insulation between them. It was immediately effective! I also decided to put acoustic insulation between the joists on every floor as my kids have particularly heavy feet.

With the property insulated to an inch of its life I’m actually quite looking forward to the winter this year. The proof of the pudding will be in the eating as they say.

Landscaping In Time For Spring

Posted by Blog Team | Posted in Products & Services | Posted on 23-11-2012

With winter now in full swing, those of you who offer landscaping services may well find yourselves being asked by customers to help get their gardens ready and protected from the extreme weather ahead. Don’t forget it’s also a good time to let potential customers know – that if they’re thinking about a hard landscaping project – if they act now they can have their garden ready andblooming in spring next year.

It’s always worth asking your customers if they would like their hard landscaping jobs done now as areas covered in paving and aggregate can be much easier to maintain during the winter months. So, make sure you check out our useful Landscaping website, which is here to supply everything you could possibly need to make every job a success, such as Marshalls Paving, Elite Fencing, Softwood Decking and Rolawn Medallion Turf.

Here’s a handy tip for you to pass onto your customers. Normal rock salt can be used as part of a homeowner’s general winter maintenance. It can be used on most Marshalls driveways and paving products however, customers should also be advised that de-icing salts must not be used on any Marshalls wet cast products; such as the Heritage, Coach house, Firedstone and Woodstone.

Jewson Helps BBC Children in Need

Posted by Blog Team | Posted in Community | Posted on 21-11-2012

We are very proud to have been involved in helping BBC Children in Need as part of a BBC1 special programme DIY SOS: The Big Build.

The programme featured the renovation of a centre for children with additional needs in Edinburgh, called The Yard. The centre helps children and young people aged three to 25. This year it is celebrating 25 years of helping families deal with the demands of daily life, giving the young people a space to develop their confidence and encouraging them to make lasting friendships.

The Yard receives a grant towards its costs from BBC Children in Need, but the building and its outdoor space were in desperate need of a total overhaul. Our Edinburgh branch, which is adjacent to The Yard, donated £1,500 of building materials to BBC Children in Need to help with the renovation. In addition, the branch opened up part of its own yard, giving extra space to the construction team and the BBC camera crew.

The build took 10 days from the end of September to the beginning of October and with the help of more than 300 people, it transformed both the building and outdoor play area.

Stewart Fraser, Merchandising and Equipment Manager at our Edinburgh Branch, commented: “It was a fantastic experience being part of the project, we’re really pleased that we’ve been able to help our neighbours in such a practical way. We hope the young people that visit the centre will get many more years of enjoyment from it!”
