Get your Green Deal advisor course at Greenworks!

Posted by Blog Team | Posted in Events | Posted on 25-07-2012

Great news from the Greenworks Training Academy! They’ve become the first training facility in the builders’ merchant industry to run the new Green Deal Advisor (GDA) Domestic course. It’s only open to candidates who are already certified Domestic Energy Assessors, but the qualification allows you to carry out a Green Deal qualifying assessment and produce a Green Deal Advice Report (GDAR).

Once completed, the course lets you provide customers with information on the principles, financing and operation of the Green Deal; to undertake Green Deal EPCs, occupancy assessments and to prepare and issue domestic Green Deal Advice Reports (GDARs).

Dale Hillery an independent Domestic Energy Assessor attended the course and said: “We were the first group to complete this course and it met all my expectations. The trainer was very impressive and the Greenworks Academy was really good as it had a lot of the energy efficient products on show, which was very helpful.”

If you’re interested in this course or any of the other training courses at the Greenworks Training Academy visit: www.greenworks.co.uk or ask at your local Jewson branch!

Flood defence solutions for all

Posted by Blog Team | Posted in Products & Services | Posted on 13-07-2012

When you consider the amount of flooding we’ve already had in the UK, it’s a worrying prospect that the problem is only expected to get worse due to Global Warming. There’s no denying that flooding has devastating consequences – in some cases leaving homes and businesses destroyed.

With this in mind, we’ve decided to team up with UK Flood Barriers (UKFB) to offer its specialist Flood Angel® flood defence products across 43 of our branches in flood risk zones, including Aberystwyth in Wales, where many people were recently left homeless by flash floods.

By working together, we’re hoping to increase access to effective defences to help protect against flooding via sewage systems and airbricks – which are at far higher risk than entrances.

If you have got customers who are worried about flooding – talk to them about Flood Angel® Non-Return Valves. These can sit within sewage pipes to protect basements and ground flood rooms against flooding caused by the return flow of sewage water. Airbricks are also a likely source for letting in water, and the Flood Angel® Anti-flood Airbricks can be installed as an alternative; triggered by the power of the oncoming water, it still allows the free flow of air when it’s not in use.

Part 8 – Measuring up the kitchen – Written by Laura Warren

Posted by Blog Team | Posted in The Self Build Journey | Posted on 06-07-2012

We’ve at last got a space where our kitchen is going to be. The builders have stripped all the plaster of the walls, taken out a chimney breast and knocked a great big hole into the dining room. It’s already hard to imagine that there was once a mouldy bath in one corner and a rotten sink under the window in this room.

I met Glen and Nottingham Colwick branch manager, Sarah Miles at the house today. They came down to measure up the kitchen and take a look around. It was so nice to get a female viewpoint on what needs doing – looking beyond the dust and grime – and making really helpful suggestions.

They suggested moving the downstairs loo into what was going to be a cupboard at the front of the house. Glen recommended a corner toilet and basin. Gary was concerned about it being a tight squeeze but was quickly challenged with the question from the three of us.

“How much time were you planning on spending in there?”

He didn’t have an answer to that one especially as there will be two other toilets in the house. The main point is that it’s freed up a space off the kitchen for a utility room where the washing machine and tumble dryer will go. That means more room for cupboards and drawers in the kitchen. An excellent solution and one of which I’m very pleased.

Glen and Sarah went away with a pad full of measurements. My next step is to go to the local kitchens branch and sit down with Glen at his computer whilst he designs the kitchen. I’m very much looking forward to that.
