Jewson goes green and pledges support for Barnardo’s

Posted by Blog Team | Posted in Community | Posted on 31-05-2011

We recently announced the launch of our new two-year ‘together’ charity partnership with Barnardo’s, a charity that supports over 100,000 children, young people and their families every year. Since 2002, we have raised over £2 million for worthy causes including Help the Hospices, the British Heart Foundation, Great Ormond Street and Cancer Research UK.

The new partnership was celebrated with a launch event at the head office in Binley, which marked the start of the ‘Go Green’ week of fundraising activities – aimed at kicking off proceedings in a big way. Activities include a cricket match, a five-mile run as well as a chance for Jewson employees to display their skills in a week long football competition.

Our Managing Director Peter Hindle MBE commented: “As part of our commitment to sustainable development, Jewson has a long and well established tradition of supporting many local community projects and charities. Our staff are incredibly enthusiastic about our new partnership with Barnardo’s and have already started planning some truly inspiring fundraising events and activitities with our customers and suppliers”.

Jewson and Help the Hospices partnership benefits local communities.

Posted by Blog Team | Posted in Community | Posted on 18-05-2011

Our ‘together’ partnership with Help the Hospices has successfully raised a staggering £338,000 for the charity since it launched in 2009. The scheme, which also includes our sister brands, has seen over 500 Jewson sites twinned with 170 hospices around the UK. Allowing staff, customers and suppliers the chance to make a real difference at the heart of their local communities.

David Praill, chief executive at Help the Hospices, said: “Hospices provide their services free of charge to patients and their families – but hospice care is not free to provide.

“We are extremely grateful to Graham for choosing us as their ‘together’ partner and giving local hospices the exciting opportunity to benefit from this huge collective fundraising effort. The money that has been raised will add to the precious funds that allow local hospices to care for more than 170,000 adults and children with terminal and life-limiting illnesses each year, as well as their friends and families.”

Since its launch in 2002 this programme has raised almost £2 million for some great causes including the British Heart Foundation, Great Ormond Street and Cancer Research UK. The programme encourages Jewson staff, their families, customers and suppliers to organise and participate in a range of activities to support the nominated charity through fundraising and volunteering. Key fundraising events included the Tour de Jewson, a long distance bike ride, and a Charity Gala Dinner, which helped significantly towards raising the final sum.

The open day was about sharing information on sustainable products and building practices, as well as advice on meeting requirements under the Code for Sustainable Homes and the building regulations. Here’s some footage from the event…

Our branch in Lytham St Annes recently played host to a sustainable future day, sharing information on sustainable products and building practices. 80 local builders, contractors, self-builders and DIYers attended the open day, where they received advice and help about meeting requirements under the Code for Sustainable Homes and the building regulations.

With presentations every hour from specialist suppliers covering topics such as heat pumps, solar PV, rainwater harvesting, insulation and underfloor heating, visitors gained a wealth of useful information. Following on from the buffet lunch, there were presentations covering our Greenworks Training Academy, which is a dedicated training centre for customers who wish to gain hands-on knowledge of sustainable product solutions, renewable technologies and MCS Accreditation.

One local Jewson customer who attended the event was John Birch from Intelligent Solar Systems Installations Ltd. He said: “Today has been very useful because green issues are the topic of the moment, and over the next few years they are going to become even more important in the UK. People are keen to get these technologies installed in order to save money, as utility bills are becoming very expensive.”

The next sustainable future day will be held in Flitwick, Bedfordshire on the 16th of June.

We’ve just launched the Greenworks Learning Gateway, a free online learning facility developed to complement the new Greenworks Training Academy. The free service will help customers to not only understand new legislation but also the new market opportunities available to them.

The website offers easy access to useful information focused on the green agenda. Broken down into bite size chunks, the tutorials cover topics such as insulation, timber, building fabric solutions, renewable technology and more. Most of the courses take around 40 minutes to an hour to complete and have a computer voiceover, so you don’t have to do lots of on-screen reading.

Malcolm Gough, our Market Director of Sustainability commented: “The Greenworks Learning Gateway is yet another example of Jewson’s on-going commitment to contribute to a more sustainable built environment. With over 70 hours of free tutorials already available – and more being added all the time – our customers will reap the benefits.”
