5 things to think about when choosing a wood-based panel

When it comes to selecting the best wood-based panel for your project, there’s a lot of products out there to choose from.

From OSB, to ply, MDF, to fibre board, the options are endless.

Luckily, leading wood-based panel manufacturer, Norbord, is here to offer some guidance on what to look for when choosing a panel.

1. Strength

It’s a bit of an obvious one, but different boards offer different levels of strength. Think about what you’ll be using the board for and choose a product that’s suitable. There’s no point paying for a premium system if you’re just looking for a quirky feature wall. However, if you’re looking for something that can take the weight of cabinets, radiators or railings, then you need something much denser like OSB.

2. Knots and weak spots

Density is key if you’re planning to fix heavy units to the board. A lot of boards that are made out of wood chip have knots and weak spots which make it difficult to securely fix things. Look for a product that doesn’t contain these if you want peace of mind.

3. Humidity

With any wood-based product, you need to consider the impact of humidity. If you’re using a board in a particularly humid setting such as bathroom then you may be at risk of bending or warping. Go for a product that’s been bonded with a waterproof resin and offers a high level of water resistance.

4. Delamination
Where materials are made up of different layers, they can be at risk of separating. For example, plywood is typically made up of multiple layers of thin wood veneers that are glued together. Too much or too little glue can cause issues that lead to ‘poor quality’ plywood delaminating. Choose a board with precise engineering for long-term confidence.

5. Environmental impact
If you’re looking for a board that’s environmentally friendly, be sure to look for one without added formaldehyde. This can be found in glue resins in the manufacture of some pressed wood products and can impact health.

If you’re looking for a board that ticks all the boxes, Norbord’s latest SterlingOSB Zero StrongFix has been designed for added strength, security and peace of mind. The precision-engineered OSB board has no knots or weak spots so it’s able to support fixtures and fittings up to 400kg anywhere on the panel. It also has zero-added formaldehyde and is suitable for humid conditions.
