Anti-Christmas: the playlist

Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me – Elton John and George Michael

It’s a shame that these two will now be associated with Christmas for the rest of time, but the true message of this banger remains the same: anyone else sick of these 3pm sunsets?

Killing in The Name – Rage Against the Machine

Ah yes, the glory days of 2009 when X-Factor winner Joe McElderry was knocked off the top of the charts by one of the least Christmassy songs ever. Congrats to all involved.

Fairytale of New York – The Pogues ft. Kirsty MacColl

This song really is the ultimate Scrooge anthem. And people can’t even accuse you of not being in the festive spirit. Is it technically a Christmas tune? Yes. Is Shane MacGowan wearing sunglasses throughout the vid? Also yes. He wishes he was on a beach in Lanzarote too.

Feeling Good – Michael Bublé

We reckon they put him in the microwave earlier than usual this year. Michael Bublé has been sighted multiple times already and it’s only November. His cover of ‘Feeling Good’ references sun in the sky and rivers running free, and those are the autumnal vibes we’re still desperately clinging on to.

Looking for the Summer – Chris Rea

The irony of a Christmas icon having a song which goes ‘I’m still looking, looking for the summer’. Last time we checked, Chris, you were driving home for Christmas! You’ve gone the wrong way, mate!

Starships – Nicki Minaj

Starships were meant to fly, not reindeers. Also the ultimate tune to take you back to the warmer months of summer. Invest in an on-site sun lounger and position it near the heater. Close your eyes and it’s like you’re back on your jollies. As in holidays. No Santa references here, promise.

Christmas Lights – Coldplay

Actually, a lovely tune which completely tramples any idea of white Christmases and fairy lights we’ve had to put up with since the mid-nineties. Weirdly uplifting and quite relatable.

Baby, it’s cold outside – Tom Jones and Cerys Matthews

We live in Britain. This one is ideal for any time of the year.
