Meet our 2017 trade hero and his Band of Builders

I’m sure you’ve heard by now that we’ve been giving away some pretty impressive awards as part of our 2017 Building Better Communities competition.

In addition to our regional community awards, this year we thought it was about time our trade heroes got some recognition for the hard work they do for their local communities too. That’s why we launched our Trade Hero category, to give these heroes a little helping hand in the form of £50,000 worth of building materials to complete a community renovation project.

We’re super excited to announce that this year’s Trade Hero is (drum roll please…) Band of Builders founder, Addam Smith.

Addam and his Band of Builders first came together to transform the home of their friend, Keith, who was diagnosed with terminal cancer. In his memory, the team now has plans to help others by extending the scheme nationwide. With his Trade Hero prize, Addam hopes to change four families’ lives for the better through four separate projects.

We didn’t stop there though. David Thomas, a plasterer from Stafford, was named runner-up in the Trade Hero category and was awarded £10,000 worth of building materials.

David and his family set up the Little Laura charity after his other daughter passed away, and he has spent the past year working with Marshlands Special School to build a sensory garden in her memory.
