For many people, annual leave is the time to relax, enjoy some down time and maybe do some of the odd jobs you’ve been meaning to do for months. However, the same cannot be said for Jewson Branch Manager, David Piotrowski…
David booked a week off work to embark on a monster challenge – a 60 mile walk across the Sussex countryside, and all in 24 hours! This wasn’t for pleasure, of course. David’s aim was to raise more than £600 for Rockinghorse, the official fundraising arm of the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital.
David commented: “I first agreed to do the walk a couple of years ago and, after experiencing a few bumps in the road, I finally set about organising it,” David commented. “I set off at 4:11am and after ten miles, I could already feel the blisters starting to form. I split the walk into around five legs, using my house as a base for pit stops to recharge a little between each one.
“As time went on, every step got harder and harder. However, I willed myself to get back up and carry on after every pit stop – I was determined to complete the challenge to raise money for the children at the Royal Alexandra’s Children Hospital.
“It’s taken a few days for me to recover but it’s all worth it as I’ve now raised more than £600 for the charity, and hopefully the donations will keep coming in!”
As if the challenge wasn’t hard enough, David completed the walk on Tuesday 19th July – the hottest day of the year so far with temperatures in Sussex reaching 30°C. That didn’t deter him though and, more than 129,000 steps later, David completed the walk in a commendable 22 hours.
