Channel 4 and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) have joined forces to find the Grand Designs House of the Year, recognising the best new houses designed by architects in the UK.
We’ve taken a look at the winner of the award and some of our favourite shortlisted buildings for some inspiration.
Winner: Flint House, by Skene Catling de la Pena
The Flint House is the perfect example of how a new build house can become a part of its surrounding landscape, rather than standing out against it. It was this, along with its poetic quality, which persuaded judges to choose it as the winner of House of the Year 2015.
Sussex House, by Wilkinson King Architects
The Sussex House is a stand-alone villa in the heart of the Sussex countryside. It’s modern yet functional feel showed how the designers had invested thought into every aspect of the building, making it highly admirable to RIBA judges.
Kew House, by Piercy & Company
According to judges, the Kew House is the product of an unusually close professional relationship between the client and the architect, who both have an interest in pre-fabrication. The result is a bold, inventive and well-considered structure that made it onto the shortlist.
House at Maghera, by McGonigle McGrath
The House at Maghera is situated on the edge of a clachan – a small group of farmsteads. Its two traditional buildings are set slightly displaced from each other, meaning it sits within the surrounding landscape. Judges were pleased with the high quality of construction and the obvious skill throughout the build.
